A night to remember...

A Night to Remember

The soft hum of the restaurant surrounded them like a warm blanket, a mix of clinking glasses, muffled laughter, and the low murmur of conversations filling the air. But for Kavya, all of it faded into the background the moment he saw Anjali. She sat at a corner table near the window, her fingers nervously tracing the rim of her wine glass. The fading twilight poured through the glass, casting her face in a soft golden glow.

He paused for a moment, drinking in the sight of her. She was still the Anjali he remembered—the girl who’d once tied her hair in a messy bun during exams, who’d laughed until she cried at his terrible jokes. But tonight, there was something different about her—something more poised, yet achingly familiar.

“Kavya.” Her voice, soft and trembling, broke through his thoughts. She had noticed him, her lips curling into a hesitant smile.

He crossed the room in a heartbeat, weaving through the crowd as if the people around him didn’t exist. When he reached her, he didn’t say a word. Instead, he pulled her into a hug, holding her as tightly as he could without crushing her. Her warmth, her scent, the way her arms wrapped around him—it was all so overwhelming, so perfect.

“I can’t believe you’re here,” she whispered into his chest, her voice muffled.

“Me neither,” he replied, his voice cracking just a little. “I don’t want this moment to end.”

They sat down, but the world outside their bubble seemed to slow. The soft ticking of the wall clock above the counter caught Kavya’s attention. The sound was a reminder, sharp and persistent, of how little time they had together. He wished he could stop it, hold the hands of the clock still, and make the evening last forever.

The waiter appeared with a polite smile, breaking the spell. They ordered something, though neither could remember what. It didn’t matter. The food wasn’t why they were here.

Outside the window, the twilight deepened into shades of indigo and violet, a breathtaking display that painted the city skyline. But Kavya barely noticed. All he wanted was for the twilight to pause, to wait. He wanted the sun to linger on the horizon, keeping the night at bay just a little longer.

“Do you remember our old hangout spot?” Anjali asked suddenly, her voice pulling him back. “That tiny café near the library?”

Kavya smiled, a wave of nostalgia washing over him. “How could I forget? You’d always order that awful mint tea, and I’d end up finishing it because you couldn’t.”

She laughed, a sound so pure it made his chest ache. “And you’d always hog the good seats by the window.”

“Because you always got distracted watching people outside!”

They laughed together, their voices blending with the soft music playing in the background. Love Me Like You Do began to play, and for a moment, they both fell silent, letting the melody wrap around them. It was their song—one they’d listened to on repeat during late-night calls, dreaming of a day when distance wouldn’t keep them apart.

Kavya reached across the table, his fingers brushing hers. She looked up, her eyes meeting his, and in that moment, the restaurant, the twilight, the ticking clock—all of it disappeared.

“I hate that we waited so long for this,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

She nodded, her thumb lightly stroking his hand. “Me too. But we’re here now. That’s all that matters.”

The waiter returned with the food, and they clinked their coffee mugs together. The soft chime of coffee mugs  felt like a promise, a celebration of finally being together. The wine was rich and warm, filling them with a sense of ease.

Anjali leaned back in her chair, her gaze drifting to the clock again. “Why does it feel like time is racing?” she murmured.

“Because we’ve spent so much of it apart,” Kavya replied, his voice tinged with both regret and hope. “But tonight, we won’t let it slip away.”

They lingered at the table, sharing stories and stolen glances, their laughter bubbling over like wine..  The city outside buzzed with life, but inside, it was just the two of them, their world contained in the flickering candlelight between them.

Eventually, they found themselves walking along the quiet rooftop restaurant, the cool night air wrapping around them. Kavya couldn't slip his arm around her to pull her closer but could sense a feel that she also wanted the same ..

“Where are we going?” Anjali asked, her voice light and teasing.

“Anywhere,” he replied, a smile tugging at his lips. “As long as it’s with you.”

The night stretched on, filled with whispers and laughter, with memories revisited and new ones created. They talked about their school days, their first meeting, the notes they’d passed in class. They laughed until their cheeks ached and held each other until the world itself seemed to pause.

As the city lights blinked around them and the stars peeked through the inky sky, Kavya made a silent vow. No more waiting. No more watching the clock. Tonight, and every moment after, was theirs.

The night air outside was cool, but inside their small room, the atmosphere was charged with a warmth neither could put into words. Anjali stepped in first, her fingers still laced with Kavya’s. The faint ticking of his watch seemed louder in the stillness, a quiet reminder of how fleeting their time together was.

The room was simple yet inviting, with dim lighting and a dim light flickering as a table lamp.. A half-empty bottle of wine sat beside it, waiting to be shared. The soft hum of the city outside blended with the faint strains of music from a distant apartment.

Anjali turned to face him, her back to the small bed. For a moment, they just looked at each other. Kavya could see the glint of nervous anticipation in her eyes, and he felt it mirrored in his chest—a mix of excitement and tenderness.

“I’ve missed you,” Kavya whispered, his voice low and sincere.

Anjali smiled, stepping closer. “Then show me.”

The words lingered in the air as Kavya reached out, his hands cupping her face gently. Their first kiss was soft, almost tentative, a meeting of lips that carried years of longing. Her hands rested lightly on his chest, feeling the steady thrum of his heartbeat beneath her fingertips.

As the kiss deepened, the world around them began to fade. The distant city sounds, the ticking watch, even the flicker of the candle—all of it disappeared, leaving only the two of them. Kavya’s hands slid to her waist, his touch light yet deliberate, as though he were memorizing the moment.

“Anjali,” he murmured, breaking the kiss for a breath. His forehead rested against hers. “Are you sure?”

She nodded, her voice a soft whisper. “I’ve never been more sure of anything.”

They moved together like the slow rhythm of a familiar song, unhurried and intentional. Kavya brushed a strand of hair from her face, his fingers trailing along her cheek. The sensation made her shiver, her breath catching in her throat. She leaned into his touch, her hands finding their way to his shoulders, then slipping up to trace the line of his jaw.

Their closeness felt both new and achingly familiar, like a long-forgotten memory brought back to life. As they sank onto the bed, their movements were fluid, driven by an unspoken understanding. Each touch, each kiss, was a reminder of the years they had waited, the nights spent apart, and the dreams of this moment that had carried them through.

Kavya’s hands moved gently, tracing the curve of her arms, her back, as though exploring a work of art. Anjali mirrored his touch, her fingers skimming over the contours of his chest, her touch both tentative and bold. There was no rush, no urgency—just a deep desire to savor every second, to memorize every detail.

The candle flickered on the table, casting dancing shadows on the walls. The room felt alive with the quiet hum of their shared breaths, the rustle of fabric, the soft whispers exchanged between kisses.

“Kavya,” Anjali whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. “This feels... perfect.”

He looked at her, his eyes filled with a tenderness that took her breath away. “Because it’s us. It’s always been us.”

The night unfolded in moments they would never forget—moments of discovery, of connection, of finally breaking the barrier that time and distance had placed between them. Their love, once stretched thin by years apart, now felt unbreakable.

When they finally lay entwined, their breathing slow and steady, the candle had burned low, leaving the room bathed in a soft, golden glow. Anjali rested her head on Kavya’s chest, her fingers tracing lazy circles over his skin.

“Do you think we’ll always feel this way?” she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Kavya pressed a kiss to her hair, his arm tightening around her. “I think this is just the beginning.”

And as the city outside quieted and the watch ticked on, they drifted into a peaceful sleep, their hearts finally home.
